It is fascinating to learn that J. Alden Weir started to paint in the manner of Impressionism only after returning from Paris, to his own farm in Connecticut. Following in the tradition of American Impressionism, I feel most inspired, charged with energy and focus when I am enveloped by nature, painting Plein Air.

In my most recent series, I am depicting at ¾ life size, parts of an aging Washhouse I discovered in rural Iowa. Bathed in the warm glowing light of summer evenings, the green shadows, created by the surrounding orchestra of plant life, animate the peeling surfaces of the doors and windows. In an alla-prima manner, I seek to capture that very moment. As a resident at Weir farm, I would like to paint a series of Plein air works that will collectively create a composite portrait of the place. I will channel that same energy that Weir found while painting there and by contemplating the buildings and their interactions with nature, create a metaphor for the human-nature relationship.
