I am interested in the omnipotence of nature and human’s ambiguous place within it. We are both a part of nature and apart from it. Within this concept, I explore the landscape and human history to create paintings that express the energy of nature and the intensity of conflicts with humans. Using oil and mixed media with gestural and intuitive mark making, a range of paint applications and masking of architectural shapes, I attempt to communicate the power of the weather, the energy of life, and efforts of people to control the natural world.
I am excited about working at Weir Farm. It is another historic, rural location like the Shenandoah Valley. Because Connecticut is a new but similar historic location, your residency could enrich my body of work or even spark a new direction. This continued stimulation is necessary to to be inspired with new ideas and continue to grow as an artist. I plan to complete a small series of large paintings or a larger body of smaller works which would serve as studies for studio paintings once back home. It would also be a pleasure to present my work to the community, perhaps discussing environmental issues.
