Sandra Reed
My work is grounded in a process of patient questioning that I developed over decades of
practice as an urban plein air painter.
In recent years, I’ve undertaken a studio-based direction that derives from those plein air
experiences yet departs in that memory and symbolic forms are the sources. My project at Weir
Farm will be to create works on panel and paper that fuse my sensibilities as a landscape
painter with the new direction of graphic and symbolic forms. This fusion will be inspired by
developing the works alternately within the studio and the park grounds. The works will range
from 24x30 to 30x40 inches, developed with stencils and diverse drawing and acrylic painting
techniques, including use of a mouth atomizer.
I grew up on a working farm in Iowa and so a residency at Weir Farm is meaningful to me. The
residency will provide dedicated time to develop works for an upcoming solo exhibition.
